“Portals” Series (In Progress)
As a photographer, I’m more like an illustrator in that I create visual representations of ideas. I begin each series by drawing inspiration from the ordinary world around me. I come up with a concept and then I create sketches for the ideas that I wish to envision. The final images are created on the computer. These constructed photographs, or tableaux, are composites made using several images. Exploring my conceptual and subjective, or inner space, these images explore the intrusion of the outside into the inside. I have always loved working in photography for its veracity. I transform the ordinary world around me to create surreal, subtle, and poetic images that cause the viewer to do a double take. In this series, I started out creating images within portals - windows, doors, drapes and cloth that are floating and blending in with other landscapes. Windows have long been depicted in art throughout history and are often associated with vision and perspective. They are often seen as a portal between the inside and outside, between worlds and souls, and representing the boundary between the known and unknown. In my work I am attempting to show the ephemeralness of life, self-reflection, consciousness, and my love of the natural world.
